L’Equipe Chimie et Ingénierie des Procédés (CIP) étudie et conçoit des procédés durables voués au traitement de la pollution, ainsi qu’à la production dans les domaines phares de l’environnement, de l’agro-alimentaire et de la chimie. Membre de l’Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes (UMR-6226), l’équipe développe également des méthodologies analytiques destinées à l’évaluation des polluants à l’état de traces et à la caractérisation des interfaces afin de déterminer les performances de ces procédés.

Distinction internationale

En 2020, l’ENSCR est entrée pour la 1ère fois dans le classement international de Shanghai. Il s’agit d’un classement des principales universités mondiales établi chaque année par des chercheurs de l’université Jiao-tong de Shanghai en Chine. Les institutions sont classées selon un indice unique calculé à partir de six critères quantitatifs, notamment le nombre de chercheurs parmi ceux qui sont les plus cités et un critère de productivité rapporté à la taille du corps enseignant. Dans ce classement 2020, 34 établissements français ont été distingués. L’ENSCR a été classée dans la thématique « Chemical Engineering » aux côtés des Universités Aix-Marseille, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Poitiers… En tête de cette catégorie, on retrouve le MIT et Stanford University.

Activités/thématiques

L’équipe Chimie et Ingénierie des Procédés regroupe des enseignants-chercheurs de l’ENSCR et de l’Université de Rennes. Sa recherche est centrée sur les procédés propres, sobres et sûrs pour la production durable, le traitement de la pollution et son évaluation. Les chercheurs de l’équipe CIP travaillent sur:

  • Le développement de nouveaux procédés de traitement d’air, d’eau et des sols et de procédés de séparation respectueux de l’environnement pour une chimie verte et une production durable. Ils imaginent des couplages, étudient les mécanismes réactionnels de transformation chimique et biologique de polluants. Ils étudient les phénomènes physico-chimiques qui régissent ces processus. Ils développent aussi des outils de  simulation et transposent les concepts développés aux conditions réelles et industrielles.
  • Le développement de méthodes d’identification et de quantification de composés organiques à l’état de trace dans des milieux complexes. Ils étudient aussi leur devenir dans l’environnement et au cours des traitements. Enfin, ils identifient et quantifient les sous-produits des traitements.
  • La protection de l’environnement et de la population (traitement des eaux potables et de l’air intérieur). D’une part, Ils réfléchissent à réduire l’impact de l’activité humaine sur l’environnement par le traitement notamment des effluents industriels, agricoles ou urbains. Ils conçoivent des procédés destinés à éliminer les composés réfractaires dans les effluents liquides et cherchent aussi à diminuer les rejets gazeux de COV, odeurs… Enfin, ils travaillent à remédier à la contamination des sols par les produits organiques persistants (POP). D’autre part, ils étudient les procédés de potabilisation d’eau et de purification d’air afin d’évaluer leurs performances vis-à-vis de contaminants environnementaux dans les eaux (pesticides, perturbateurs endocriniens, résidus pharmaceutiques, …) et dans l’air (formaldéhyde, odeurs, …).
  • La valorisation de résidus de l’industrie agro-alimentaire et de gisements de ressources renouvelables pour la production de composés d’intérêt et matériaux bio-sourcés. Ils développent des procédés biotechnologiques pour la production (alcool issus d’algues, micro-organisme produisant du PHA) et des matériaux polymères biodégradables de qualité alimentaire.

L’ensemble des recherches concerne les procédés mettant en jeu les phénomènes suivants : absorption, adsorption, bioréactions, oxydation, électrochimie et séparation par membranes.
Associant démarche expérimentale et modélisation, notre approche physico-chimique des phénomènes de transport et des phénomènes et réactions aux interfaces aborde un point clé de la compréhension des processus et des procédés. Cette recherche met en oeuvre une expérimentation fine tant au niveau d’unités pilotes (photocatalyse, réacteurs et bioréacteurs, procédés membranaires en phase aqueuse et organique, réacteur électrochimique, etc.) que de la physico-chimie (caractérisation des matériaux membranaires en cours de fonctionnement, caractérisation des solutés en fonction de l’environnement physico-chimique, analyse à l’état de traces de la micropollution, mise en évidence des espèces chimiques à courte durée de vie comme les radicaux libres, suivi in situ d’activités biologiques…), complétée par des modélisations et simulations numériques à différentes échelles.

 Les équipements

L’équipe Chimie et Ingénierie des Procédés s’appuie essentiellement sur deux ensembles de moyens matériels, pilotes et matériel d’analyse, ainsi que des moyens de calcul.

Les unités pilotes concernent les principaux procédés étudiés dans l’unité :

Les procédés d’absorption avec ou sans réaction chimique

  • Une unité pilote de lavage de gaz sur colonne garnie (QG = 10 m3/ h)
  • Une unité pilote de lavage de gaz avec des contacteurs compacts (QG = 50 m3/ h)
  • Une unité pilote de lavage de gaz par pulvérisation ou brumisation (QG = 25 m3/ h)
  • Une cuve gaz-liquide agitée mécaniquement pour l’étude de cinétiques de réaction (ozonation notamment) (QG = 1,5 m3/ h)

Les procédés d’adsorption

  • Equipements de laboratoire pour les études de cinétique, d’isothermes et de compétition en milieu gazeux ou liquide.
  • Pilote d’adsorption en phase gaz sur tissus de carbone activé avec régulation de la température de régénération par effet joule  (QG = 10 à 30 m3/ h)
  • Pilote d’électrodésorption sous atmosphères contrôlées.

La génération d’air pour les procédés de traitement d’air peut être réalisée grâce à un système de préparation de gaz de synthèse par volatilisation de COV liquide dans des matrices gazeuses (air, biogaz, etc).

  • Deux fermenteurs de laboratoire
  • Un bioréacteur à membrane

Les procédés d’oxydation

  • Une cuve de chloration (QL = 5 à 15 m3/ h)
  • Un réacteur d’ozonation avec une régulation de température
  • Deux pilotes d’ozonation type colonne à bulles
  • Deux pilotes tubulaires de photocatalyse pour le traitement des gaz (QG = 3 m3/ h)
  • Un pilote de photocatalyse pour le traitement des gaz (QG = 3000 m3/ h), avec régulation de température et d’humidité
  • Un pilote plan de couplage de plasma et de photocatalyse (QG = 20 m3/ h)
  • Deux pilotes de photocatalyse pour le traitement des effluents liquides (QL = 0,1 m3/ h)

L’équipe possède également possède un ozoneur Trailigaz de capacité 24 g/h fonctionnant à l’oxygène et un analyseur d’ozone en continu (Trailigaz), ainsi qu’un pilote pour la mesure des pertes de charge en phase gaz (pour des pertes de charge faibles de 0 à 100 mbar, cette unité a été conçue pour traiter des débits jusqu’à 15 Nm3.h-1).

Les procédés à membranes

  • Un pilote de microfiltration
  • Quatre pilotes d’ultrafiltration (4 L à 150 L)
  • Deux pilotes de nanofiltration en milieu aqueux (6 L à 50 L)
  • Un pilote d’osmose inverse (50 L)
  • Deux boucles de nanofiltration en milieu organique
  • Un pilote de distillation membranaire (20 L)

L’équipe dispose de moyens analytiques permettant d’identifier et de suivre l’évolution des composés en particulier les micropolluants.

Analyse de la composition globale d’un effluent

  • Carbone organique total  couplé à un analyseur d’azote total
  • Mesure des composés organo halogénés totaux (minéralisation thermique et dosage des halogénures formés par micro-coulométrie).
  • Analyse comparative de toxicité Microtox
  • Analyseur de COV totaux, COV non méthaniques et méthane (FID)

Analyse et identification des composés à l’état de traces  (pesticides, perturbateurs endocriniens, acides aminés, composés  organo halogénés…), analyse des protéines

  • 1 Couplage GC/Masse avec un détecteur quadripolaire (SIM/SCAN simultanés) avec injecteurs multiples (liquides, espace de tête, thermo désorption) – Equipement de la plateforme MICROPOL
  • 6 Chromatographies en phase gazeuse avec détecteurs multiples (ionisation de flamme, NPD, photomètre de flamme, catharomètre…). Un appareil est équipé d’un passeur d’échantillon à espace de tête et il est possible de réaliser un couplage désorption thermique – GC.
  • 1 couplage SPE en ligne/UPLC/MS/MS de type triple quadripôle permettant de faire de la quantification de résidu à très faible concentration en mode MRM et/ou la détermination structurale de composés inconnus – Equipement de la plateforme MICROPOL.
  • 6 chaînes de chromatographie liquide à haute performance avec détecteurs multiples  (UV,  barrette de diodes, fluorimétre, réfractomètre).
  • 1 Medor (GC avec détection électrochimique) pour l’analyse des composés soufrés

Analyse et identification des composés ioniques et des minéraux en solution (anions et cations, protéines…)

  • 3 chromatographes ioniques (Dionex) équipés d’un passeur d’échantillons avec générateur d’éluant, suppression électrolytique et détection par conductimétrie ou ampérométrie.
  • 1 électrophorèse capillaire
  • 1 absorption atomique équipée en flamme

Analyse et séparation des composés à haut poids moléculaire

  • Une chaîne HPLC pour l’analyse par exclusion de gel
  • Système membranaire avec seuils de coupure multiples pouvant être utilisé avec un appareil de COT

Matériel de prélèvement

  • Canne de prélèvement iso-cinétique de gaz
  • Dispositif de prélèvement sur cartouches adsorbantes

Caractérisation de surfaces et des matériaux

  • Appareil de caractérisation de matériaux et solides poreux (mesure de la distribution microporeuse (volume poreux = f (diamètre de pore)) et de la surface BET par adsorption de gaz (N2, CO2, Ar…))
  • Porosimètre à mercure pour la caractérisation des milieux poreux et des lits fixes (densités réelle et apparente, degré de vide, distribution des tailles de pore entre 3 nm et 90 µm).
  • Analyse thermogravimétique avec détecteur par spectrométrie de masse.
  • Analyse Infra-rouge des surfaces.
